Woman Takes Out A Craigslist Ad With One Surprising Pit Bull Demand

Pit bulls are some of the most loyal and amazing creatures out there.

However, pit bulls often get a bad reputation despite their loving nature, like with the dad who was afraid a pit bull would hurt his baby girl. Luckily, there are plenty of caring and amazing pet owners who know just how special these beautiful dogs are.

One such pit bull lover is Kara Montalbano. Kara knows just how harmful the negative stereotypes around pit bulls can be. As a result, she spends much of her time volunteering for a nonprofit in Rhode Island called Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pit Bull Type Dogs.

As a pit bull owner, Kara struggled to find an apartment to rent. She told Huffington Post, “I looked for about two weeks and knew it would be a waste of time, so I decided to buy.”

Now, years later, Kara is looking to rent out her home to someone else, but she has one brilliant stipulation that will melt any pit bull-lover’s heart.

Scroll through to see the incredible Craigslist ad Kara wrote for her home rental. Her devotion just goes to show the importance of loving these wonderful creatures.

When she moved in with her boyfriend, Kara decided to rent out her house, but she made clear that there was one large stipulation: The renters had to own a pit bull.

00x0x_99AsLXVJ1s5_600x450[1]

She told Huffington Post, “If they don’t, I know they won’t have a problem finding another place to live, and I will wish them luck. I prefer renters with pit bulls because I know how hard it is to find a place to live with one, for no reason other than ignorance and labels.” Below is the Craigslist ad she posted.

Screen-Shot-2015-09-23-at-12.03.34-PM-600x387[1]

Her ad reads that she will accept dogs but that “pit bulls [are] preferred.”

Kara has also thought about purchasing more property down the line so that she can rent to even more pit bull owners. She said, “I have something that can sincerely help keep a family together, so why wouldn’t I rent to a family with a pit bull? To me, this should be the norm, and I don’t think I’m doing anything that I wouldn’t expect other dog lovers to do.”

While she awaits the perfect pit bull family, Kara has continued to volunteer for the pit bull nonprofit, making a difference in the lives of many beautiful canines.

Kara’s incredible work with the pit bull nonprofit, and her willingness to help out a pit bull-owning family in need, just go to show the incredible power a single person can have to help these amazing animals.

What do you think of Kara’s requirement to rent her house? Let us know in the comments.

Courthouse Dogs Give Heartbroken Victims The Courage To Testify

Going through a traumatic ordeal is painful enough, and that’s before having to confront the legal process in a court of law…

Oftentimes, testifying can force the victim to relive the crime — not to mention the fact that they may be sitting in the exact same room as their attacker. And as we know from videos like this, in which a father confronts his child’s murderer, court rooms can be very emotional.

Thankfully, Ellen O’Neill Stephens and Celeste Walsen created Courthouse Dogs, a nonprofit organization that specifically trains to dog to comfort those on the witness stand.

These pups are trained for two years under organizations that must be accredited by Assistance Dogs International (ADI). Many have been trained since they were puppies, and only the very best are selected to take on this incredibly difficult-yet-important role.

Statistics show that petting a dog can significantly reduce blood pressure and lower stress. That’s why Courthouse Dogs are such an amazing tool for victims that are at the height of suffering.

What do you think of these courthouse dogs? Let us know in the comments below.

Even though they’re just a two-person team, Courthouse Dogs is doing amazing work.

Despite extensive training, these pups are not to be confused with therapy pets, and are trained much differently. It’s less about engaging with the witness and more about quietly and consistently providing support.

3 Bizarre Theme Restaurants in Tokyo, Japan

alice-in-wonderland-restaurant-tokyo-japan-2
It should come as no surprise that Tokyo, Japan is the mecca of theme restaurants. From deranged hospitals to ninja waiters, there is no shortage of bizarre culinary experiences awaiting to delight and baffle your senses. Below are three interesting examples, but there are many more in Tokyo and around the world. From fantasy to horror, there’s a theme restaurant for everyone, enjoy!

Alcatraz E.R. was one of the pioneers of theme restaurants kick-starting the trend over a decade ago by capitalizing on people’s fascination with hospital food. The setting is a “medical prison” and you are the patient. The waitresses are dressed nurses, and their first order is tohandcuff you, pretend to inject a giant needle into your rear, and then lock you in a cell. There, you can order such dishes as Dead Chicken (in which two chicken feet are clasped together in peaceful repose), Penis Sausage (in which a sausage is carved to resemble a severed penis) and Intestine. There are also plenty of strange cocktail concoctions served in syringes, mannequin heads and test tubes. It’s all very bizarre and a dining experience you won’t soon forget… [Source]

Ninja Akasaka is a classy immersion in Shogun-era coolness. A featureless black doorway in Tokyo’s Akasake-Mitsuke business district leads to a maze of cave-like corridors. Soon you’re greeted by a ninja and given a secret password. Watch out for the disintegrating bridge! The food is spectacular modern Japanese, with the prices to match – in one showy dish a sword is yanked from a coconut to release a fountain of dry ice smoke. Apparently the dessert menu is particularly dramatic. It’s no surprise they’ve got a signed plaque commemorating Steven Spielberg’s visit: the place feels like a set from Indiana Jones and the Ninjas of Tokyo [Source]. On the continuum of Japanese cosplay, the Alice In Wonderland restaurant keeps things family-friendly. While you are served by a battalion of waitresses all dressed like Alice, there is plenty of other touches to keep the atmosphere from becoming totally creepy: bunny tails on the chairs, a big clock against one wall, and a Mad Hatter Tea Party room over which towers a giant lamp (you’ve shrunk, remember?) that contrasts with a tiny version at the entrance (back when you were huge). Some appetizers come served on a chessboard, and the pizzas are done up like playing-card soldiers. Try the Green Caterpillar tuna and avocado sushi roll, or the cute Mock Turtle Mimosa Salad. Mantodea (or mantises) is an order of insects that contains approximately 2,200 species in 15 families worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. A colloquial name for the order is “praying mantises”, because of the typical “prayer-like” stance, although the term is often misspelled as “preying mantis” since mantises are predatory. [Source]

Mantises have two grasping, spiked forelegs (“raptorial legs”) in which prey items are caught and held securely. Located at the base of the femur are a set of spines, usually four in number but ranging from zero to as many as five depending on the species. These spines are preceded by a number of tooth-like tubercles, which give the foreleg of the mantis its grasp on its prey. [Source]

The articulation of the head is also remarkably flexible, permitting nearly 300 degrees of movement in some species, allowing for a great range of vision (their compound eyes may contain up to 10,000 ommatidia and have a large binocular field of vision), as their hunting relies heavily on vision. If not wingless, a mantis will have two sets of wings: the outer wings, called the foreseeing or tegmina, are usually narrow, opaque, and leathery and function as camouflage and as a shield for the inner wings, or hindwings– it is this much more delicate, broad, and transparent set that is actually used for flight. Mantises are exclusively predatory. Insects form the primary diet, but larger species have been known to prey on small scorpions, lizards, frogs, birds, snakes, fish, and even rodents; they will prey upon any species small enough to successfully capture and devour. Most species of mantis are known to engage in cannibalism. The majority of mantises are ambush predators, waiting for prey to stray too near. The mantis then lashes out at remarkable speed. [Source]

Generally, mantises protect themselves by camouflage and concealment. When directly threatened, many mantis species stand tall and spread their forelegs, with their wings fanning out wide. The fanning of the wings makes the mantis seem larger and more threatening, with some species having bright colors and patterns on their hind wings and inner surfaces of their front legs for this purpose. As in related insect groups, mantises go through three stages of metamorphosis: egg, nymph, and adult (mantises are among thehemimetabolic insects). The nymph and adult insect are structurally quite similar, except that the nymph is smaller and has no wings or functional genitalia. The nymphs are also sometimes colored differently from the adult, and the early stages are often mimics of ants. [Source]

Vertical Gardens: A Botanical & Artistic Approach by Patrick Blanc

Do plants really need soil? No, they don’t….. The soil is merely nothing more than a mechanic support. Only water and the many minerals dissolved in it are essential to plants, together with light and carbon dioxide to conduct photosynthesis.

Plants in the wild are growing on vertical surfaces

Wherever water is available all year long, as in tropical forests or in temperate mountain forests, plants can grow on rocks, tree trunks and soil-less slopes. In Malaysia, for instance, out of the 8,000 known species, about 2,500 are growing without any soil.

Even in temperate parts of the world, many plants are growing on cliffs, cave entrances, or fallen rocks. On such very steep places grow many Berberis, Spirea and Cotoneaster species. Their naturally curved branches indicate that they originate from naturally steep biotopes and not from flat areas like the gardens where man usually grows them….

Thus, as seen from nature, it is possible for plants to grow on nearly soil-less vertical surfaces as long as there is no permanent water shortage.

Walls and plants, a surprising, though long-lasting combination

Whenever roots are allowed to grow deep inside a wall, they can easily damage the wall and cause its destruction. That is precisely what happened to the Angkor temples.

This root-related damage can be prevented if water is regularly given to plants. Roots are then only spreading on the surface, leaving the inner wall unaffected.

From these observations, and aiming at setting up permanent plant cover on walls with a minimum of maintenance, Patrick Blanc conceived the Vertical Garden.

The core innovation is to use the root ability to grow not only on a volume (of soil, of water, of sand, …..) but also on a surface. Without any soil, the plant-supporting system is very light and thus can be implemented on any wall, whatever its size.

The Vertical Garden can also be set up indoor. Artificial lighting is then usually required. It’s even possible to set it up in fully closed places without any natural light such as underground parking lots.

The plant species selection is set according to the prevailing climatic conditions.

The Vertical Garden is composed of three parts: a metal frame, a PVC layer and a layer of felt. The metal frame is hung on a wall or can be self-standing. It provides an air layer acting as a very efficient thermic and phonic isolation system.

A 1 cm-thick PVC sheet is riveted to the metal frame. This layer brings rigidity to the whole structure and makes it waterproof. A felt layer, made of polyamide, is stapled on the PVC. This felt is rotproof and its high capillarity allow an homogeneous water distribution. The roots grow on this felt.

Plants are installed on this felt layer as seeds, cuttings or already grown plants. The density is about thirty plants per square meter.

The watering is provided from the top. Tap water must be supplemented with nutrients. Watering and fertilisation are automated.

The whole weight of the Vertical Garden , including plants and metal frame, is lower than 30 kg per square meter. Thus, the Vertical Garden can be implemented on any wall, without any size or height limitation.

The Vertical Garden on concrete walls: a shelter for biodiversity and a cleaning system for cities

The Vertical Garden allows man to re-create a living system very similar to natural environments. Its a way to add nature to places where man once removed it. Thanks to botanical knowledge, it’s possible to display natural-looking plant landscapes even though they are man-made.

In any city, all over the world, a naked wall can be turned into a Vertical Garden and thus be a valuable shelter for biodiversity. It’s also a way to add nature to the daily life of city inhabitants.

Besides, thanks to its thermic isolation effect, the Vertical Garden is very efficient and aids in lowering energy consumption, both in winter (by protecting the building from the cold) and in summer (by providing a natural cooling system).

The Vertical Garden is also an efficient way to clean up the air. In addition to leaves and their well-known air-improving effect, the roots and all the micro-organisms related to them are acting as a wide air-cleaning surface with the highest weight to size efficiency. On the felt, polluting particles are taken in from the air and are slowly decomposed and mineralised before ending up as plant fertiliser. The Vertical Garden is thus an efficient tool for air and water remediation wherever flat surfaces are already extensively used by human activities. [Source]

ARTIST RAY VILLAFANE – PUMPKIN CARVING MASTER

Ray was born in Queens, New York to Reinaldo Villafane and Virginia (Guzman) Villafane. He spent his childhood on Long Island and was raised alongside two sisters and one brother. At a very young age Ray showed a knack for art; a passion that his mother approvingly encouraged him to pursue. Throughout his academic career, Ray’s classmates and teachers also recognized his natural artistic abilities. Ray graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1991.

However, also having a passion for children, he elected for a career in teaching. From 1993 to 2006 Ray taught Art for students grade K-12 in Bellaire, Michigan. It was during his teaching tenure that Ray began “dabbling” in pumpkin sculpting, initially as projects with his students. After several custom-carved requests from students’ parents, Ray realized he was on to something with his pumpkins and started offering them to local hotels and restaurants. It became his fall hobby for several years.

In 2003, Ray married Tamara Anne Schmidt. While Ray and Tammi’s union gave rise to a blended family, they also had children together. It was during this time that Ray was encouraged by his wife to “find an art medium he really enjoyed and run with it”; they could use his obvious talent to supplement their income and support their large family. Ray decided to contact a former SVA classmate whom he had thought to be working for Disney as an Animator. Upon speaking, he learned that the friend was actually sculpting for Disney. Having really sparked Ray’s interest, he flew to New York to spend a weekend observing his colleague in action. That weekend clarified for Ray exactly what he wanted to do; he went home and started sculpting his first piece.

Ray’s hobby of pumpkin sculpting was brought to an entirely new level in 2007 when he was contacted by High Noon Entertainment and asked to participate in the Food Network’s Challenge Show, Outrageous Pumpkins. Ray competed as one of four professional pumpkin sculptors, impressed the judges enough to sweep all three rounds and was awarded the Grand Prize. Outrageous Pumpkins logged the highest ratings of any other Challenge episode, and a second invitation was extended to Ray in 2009. They wanted him to come back and defend his title in their Outrageous Pumpkins Challenge II. Ray defended his 2008 title and took home the 2010 Grand Prize from the Food Network’s Pumpkin Challenge II. The exposure of Ray’s style, talent and creativity amassed an all-new appreciation for pumpkin “carving”, and his artistic take on the traditional jack-o-lantern has granted him invitations from across the globe for VIP Galleries (Very Impressive Pumpkins). From the President’s Quarters in the White House to Bermuda’s Sousa’s Gardens, Ray’s pumpkins have gathered a cult-like following. [Source]

Portraits of People Seeing Their Younger Self in a Mirror

Tom Hussey is an award-winning lifestyle advertising photographer based in Dallas, Texas. In a series entitledReflections, Hussey shows a series of elderly people looking in a mirror at their younger self.

According to an interview with PetaPixel, the idea first struck when Hussey was talking to a WWII veteran named Gardner. On the cusp of his 80th birthday, Gardner opined that he still felt like a young man.

The conversation would inspire Hussey to photograph Gardner looking into a bathroom mirror with a reflection of his younger self looking back at him. The resulting image was used in his portfolio and years later was picked up by Novartis as the concept for an advertising campaign for their Alzheimer’s drug.

The resulting campaign was posted by Hussey to Behance back in 2009. Since then it has been the third most ‘appreciated’ project on the entire website, with nearly 71,000 ‘likes’ and 1.535 million views.

Be sure to check out more of Tom’s amazing work at the online links below.

This Guy Takes Photos with Random Things in his Beard because He Can

It all started over Christmas break when Pierce Thiot (the beard) participated in his family’s holiday ‘talent show’ by trying to put as many pencils as he could into his beard. His wife, photographer Stacy Thiot, snapped a pic and Will It Beard was born.
Since then the couple have taken a series of funny portraits and videos with random things stuck into Pierce’s beard. You can keep up with the latest and find many more at the links below.
